DC
Hello, I’m Emily. I’m here to help you on your journey to healing and wellness. Together we will work on reducing pain, restoring movement, improving function, and increasing flexibility. My goal is to help you do everything you want to do with fewer limitations in your body.
I aspire to practice evidence-informed care, integrating the best clinical data available with extensive anatomical knowledge, biomechanical understanding, and clinical intuition. I approach each patient as a whole person and recognize that our past experiences, our emotions, and our mental state each impact injury and recovery. I endeavor to think creatively about all your symptoms and look for possible connections between seemingly separate problems. My treatment techniques are on the gentle side, with a focus on your soft tissues (muscles and fascia) in addition to your joints. I perform standard chiropractic adjusting (diversified style), and also utilize mobilization, drop table, flexion/distraction treatment, and an Activator adjusting tool.
Your experience in your body is the guide to everything we do together. If something is uncomfortable, I want you to tell me, because ignoring your body’s “no” is not how we help you heal. There is almost certainly something we can do differently to achieve therapeutic benefit in a way that feels good to you.
In order to help you understand the journey from activity to injury to treatment to recovery, I will talk your ear off about your body, teaching you about the structure and function of the anatomy involved. For faster recovery outside of my office,I will offer you stretches, exercises, and activity modifications to empower you to heal swiftly, avoid future injury, and increase your wellness.
I always felt called to health care, focusing my desire to learn more about people by majoring in Psychology and Drama at the University of Virginia. During my time at UVA, I hurt my back and became a chiropractic patient for the first time. The experience taught me that manual therapy is a powerful tool in the quest to live more comfortably in my body.
For the next decade, I pursued arts production and education, while I considered what kind of healthcare I wanted to provide. I was based in Washington, DC where I founded a theater company with a friend (which is still going strong), and produced arts festivals and parades for organizations like The National Cherry Blossom Festival. I also continued to receive regular chiropractic care. I came to believe that the standard Western medicine model, with its reliance on pharmaceutical intervention, is insufficient to heal the body, heart, and mind. I started to search for other modalities of healing, educating myself along the way with various courses.
Then in the spring of 2015, I was in a bicycle accident that upended my entire life. With a wrist that might be fractured, no health insurance, and limited financial resources, I turned to a chiropractor for help. I’d been seeing chiropractors for more than 10 years, but my experience with Dr. K helped me realize that was the medicine I wanted to offer! 18 months later, I began at the University of Western States to earn my Doctorate of Chiropractic Medicine.
For the past two and a half years, I treated patients at Ridgeline Clinic in southeast Portland. I am humbled to have been able to help so many people with a wide variety of problems from garden variety neck tension to debilitating neurological symptoms.
In August 2023 I had the incredibly good fortune of connecting with Dr. Allison Guyn, the founder of Lemongrass Chiropractic. After many conversations and a lot of careful planning, Allison sold me her practice in December 2023 and I am so excited to be here.
My appointments here at Lemongrass are structured just the way I like them, with plenty of time to get to know each patient, learn what’s going on in your body, and understand your goals. We will spend about 25-30 minutes together each visit, discussing your progress, performing treatment, and checking in about your home care.
Home care is an important part of the process of healing. If we see each other once a week, that’s a half hour of treatment with me and 167 and a half hours of you on your own. I know that changing routines to make space for stretches and exercises can be a challenge. We’ll work together to come up with ideas for how your home care can fit into the life you’re already living and get you back to doing the things you love sooner. I’m ready to get started as soon as you are!
